I have pursued the concept of digital transformation for most of the last 30 years. First, the words are often used broadly but must be clearly defined. Like the term “the information age,” digital transformation is thrown around.
- Digital transformation is the process of moving analog assets to digital assets.
- Digital Transformation is the use of automation to remove manual processes.
- Digital transformation prepares your organization’s information to be easily used and searched.
- Digital Transformation is the last stop on the train bound for the information age.
- Digital transformation is a fun, made-up term that can be used in the same sentence as the information age. It refers to imaginary things that may exist but only in books and movies.
For me, the last one rings the most true. Why is that? The information age requires more organizations to complete a digital transformation. But the reality is that digital transformation isn’t just moving analog systems to digital output.
It is so much more. The path to digital transformation involves moving along an organizational maturity model that supports your organization. It involves using automation to replace manual processes while simultaneously converting analog assets.
It is about reducing the time required to complete a series of tasks.
Digital transformation is the door your organization has to pass through to enter the hallway. At the end of the hallway, once you have automated your information and removed analog and manual processes, you cross the threshold into the information age.
