The Value of Information

The postulation at the beginning of this section is that we use information to solve problems. This of course precludes artistic endeavors although one could argue that many artistic endeavors attempt to “explain the human condition” we are more focused on the information created, managed and used in the spheres of this book, the Eduverse, Healthverse, Havenverse, Myverse and the overall Syncverse. There are two core considerations with IP that must be denoted early.

1. How do I get the information?

2. Is that information from a valid source?

The first one is actually probably the quickest way to solve the second. If we follow the traditional information providers (text books, information clearing houses etc.) you would purchase a subscription to the online Syncverse service and would therefore know that the source was in fact valid. The second component could be a fact checking service that would be provided for information gathered off the internet as a whole (compiling and comparing various internet sources and providing you with a 360 degree view of the information.

Of course there are a number of other considerations for the information value that we will explore in this section.

The Nature of a problem

Information=solutions to problems

Problems can be the death of solutions. The issue is that solutions often have fatal flaws. Those flaws reduce the quality of the solution and create a scenario where the solution is less in value than the “cost of the problem.”

1. The overall cost of the solution has to exceed the cost of the problem

2. The overall cost of solving the problem has to fit in the cost of the solution as a component in solution development

The first is simply good business. Don’t create a solution to a problem that costs more than the original problem created. The second one is a new concept for solution development, adding the projected cost of problems into the initial cost of the solution. This plays directly to the strength of the Syncverse, the concept of creating a “Communospace[1]” where the community with guidance builds the overall correct solution for the problem. There would be a series of Communospace within each of the overall ‘verses of the Syncverse.

[1] Communospace is a Syncverse term describing a place where multiple people can interact around a specific problem in seeking a resolution to that problem. The difference between the Syncverse version and the existing internet version today is the level of moderation involved in this.

The Business of Information

Information = solutions

We use information to solve problems. It is the core reason to capture and reuse information. Why reinvent the wheel if it has already been done?

· Gather information with the purpose and function of solving problems.

· Make this “information” available to more people

Do you increase the number of solutions?

That is the question that drives the Syncverse. I believe in the old adage “two heads are better than on” being a viable and structured response to a problem. Extrapolating that to IP/IC production brings out the need for the Syncverse as a problem resolution creation tool.

1. Problems are noted and entered into the broad Syncverse

2. Users receive those problems and the “solutions” considered in one of two ways

a. They sign up for a newsfeed (current problems)

b. They have that specific problem and search for the solution in the Syncverse

3. Users compile new solutions to problems

4. Users refract and refine problems and problem statements to better enable the next person looking for a similar problem

All of this is described in the book “Transitional Services” in the section devoted to the process called Document Lifecycle Management or DLM©. While the DLM© solution as designed for a single organization to leverage as a IP/IC problem solution system it could just as easily be applied to the broader Syncverse.

With the DLM concept you have the SME’s or subject matter experts whose focus is on recovering, finding and leveraging t existing, emerging and needed IP/IC in the Syncverse. This allows users to submit problems they perceive to the SME community who then determines if there is a solution. For higher end problems that require specific expertise, this could be a paid information broker/merchant service.

The initial business value of the Syncverse is the ability to bring more solutions to bear against more problems with many more people involved in solving the problems.

The “Free” think tank

This is a fee based solution for innovation based on the innovation model used by larger companies. For small companies that cannot support this type of cost. They pay a single fee to the system and then receive commitments that their information and products/company IP/IC will be held in the highest security.

Users sign up to be a part of the think tank and if accepted they receive a monthly stipend for every month they are activity (and appropriately) engaged in the system. If they violate the security or the rules they are removed from the Think Tank.

The value for the business is a low cost “innovation” lab. The value for the people engaged is a chance to think creativity and use skills they don’t always get a chance to use. Finally you create a larger base of people considering your problem which of course takes us back to the original tenant of the Syncverse, two heads are better than one!

1. Access to a large number of people thinking about improving your idea or product

2. The people involved agree that they will provide any thoughts or information to your organization based on the membership agreement

3. The organization compensates any used ideas based on the membership agreement

The system is setup in this way. Organizations can submit ideas and products to the team. The team is filtered (all competitors and similar products are removed) and then is provided access (read-only – most likely online only) to the information. They can then submit back ideas, improvements or suggestions.

Additionally the company can have a blind/open suggestion box in the think tank that any consumer or customer can submit information

The Business of Information

Information = solutions

Let’s assume for a meant that the initial statement of this section is correct. Information = solutions. We gather and collect information to solve specific problems.

Note: Of course this precludes the joy and wonder of the written word as presented in fiction but that is at this point intentional. We could argue that in fact we use fiction as a solution to a problem as well but for now, we are simply excluding fiction from this overall process.

Based then on the overall assumption that we develop and use information to solve specific problems then what are the problems of the world today that the Syncverse would in fact help solve, more effectively?

· Famine?

· Hunger?

· Education?

· Equality?

· Others?

First it would not be possible to present a statistical view of the solution as the Syncverse doesn’t exist today. Nor, has there been anything like this since the Library at Alexandria[1]. But the Library at Alexandria was inaccessible to the vast majority of the people alive at the time it was in existence.

The internet and by extension the Syncverse now provides us with the opportunity to build a solut0oin that in fact solves the distribution problem as well as the collection problem at the same time. We as a society can now build, collect, examine, consider, critique and adopt not one solution to the various problems facing us but many solutions.

For the rest of this chapter we will take various “problems” and work though the overall business value of the solution leveraging the Syncverse or one of the other “’verse’s” described in previous chapters.

Syncverse Essay number 11

11. The path to equality

When you think about this world we live in, there are a number of inequalities that will if you spend enough time thinking about them, drive you “around the bend.” Women are still less empowered in this world. Teachers make so little money it’s really scary.

The Syncverse is my little attempt to bring about a level of equal. Not to dispense equality. Rather to change a little what is there to provide all with an equal opportunity. At heart I am a capitalist. I believe you have to reward people who are willing to go the extra mile. But I do believe all people should have a chance to fit their feet into the staggered starting blocks.

With that I have envisioned the path I believe leads to equality and that is an improved educational system worldwide.

The Eduverse provides us with a staggered starting block (like the 100 meter dash in the Olympics) where all people have an equal chance of being successful. The reality is that the world itself will intervene and remove some level of the equality. Yes we all will have the “chance” to start equally but war, pestilence and famine will reduce the equality. Although I wonder if by chance those who are suddenly given a chance might be able to move us closer to solutions of the problems around them.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Over time there are a number of potential changes.

1. People will being to see other people as people

2. People will be able to relate and find things in common with other people more quickly

3. More people will being looking at the large “unsolvable problems” and being offering new and exciting potential solutions

These seem idealistic but in fact are very simple to accomplish. The first one is quite simply to observe people as human. All humans are different, all humans are the same. The logical disruption of that statement is simple. At our core we all have aspirations and dreams. Sadly some of those dreams are of dominance and control. But some of those dreams are of fields of flowers and children happily playing.

The second goal is pretty easily accomplished as well. In using the facilities of “common” education within the concept of the Eduverse everyone in the world will be introduced to the same core topics (with regional alterations as needed) so that all humans have the same core knowledge. I believe it is harder to kill and/or attack or even subjugate someone who thinks the way you think.

Finally it is the Mozart principle. If you kill Mozart before he or she is born can in fact they still become Mozart, sadly the answer is no. How many Mozart’s have died before their gift was realized? IF we can increase the number of people looking at specific problems we can change the way the world perceives, solves and manages the problems we have. It’s really simple math, going to the old adage “two heads are better than one.” It expands the exposure of a problem to a great level of thinking. The communal mind will move things forward more quickly than this individualistic problem solving system we have today. It’s not about the Nobel Prize, it’s about the “I am a human being, prize”

Or quite simply to end, “thank you Sir or Madame for your exceptional contribution to the advancement of people, you are now known as a Human Being.”

Myverse Business Opportunities and more on the Myverse Migration tool

Business Opportunity (Myverse)
One of the things that organizations will be able to provide is a backup of the Myverse. There are a number of companies that offer this service today for home users including Amazon, Mozy and others. What they don’t offer today is the value of the Syncverse, my data everywhere regardless of device. They do however offer online backups of your information. With the Syncverse they can now offer online and disk based backups of your critical information. You can sign-up for XYZ Company to backup your Myverse and keep that data for you, or send it to you in a package of Blu-Ray disks.

The other component of the Myverse or Personal Migration tool would be the location of the data and how that data is staged for the user. Users may prefer that their pictures be stored online, but only the last 30 days be available near line. Or there could be a connection to Flickr or other picture services that says rotate my online pictures and only keep the recent 30 days of pictures (and most viewed) on XYZ photo service.

For critical information the user could also ask that the recovery data store be maintained after the migration. This could be offered (see above in the business opportunity) as a premium service that included a connection to the online backup vendor. This could also be dumped to a Blu-Ray or DVD format for users to have as a permanent baseline.

Business Opportunity (Myverse)
Data management or data buckets will be a component of the overall solution that organizations can offer to individuals. If you have thousands of pictures, having a system that allows you to identify one person in a picture one time (and then the system groups all pictures into groups based on the people you have identified once) would be of value. This would be the “photo sorting” system that would allow users to effectively use their photos and videos. The same could also be true for critical documents like tax returns, charitable receipts etcetera.

There is a number of other “buckets” that could be offered to the system. These would and could include:

· Photo (as mentioned above)

· Tax services (scan your receipts into your Myverse

· Last will and testament (fill out your will and post it to your Myverse)

· Music match (find music in your collection and share local bands with similar sounds so that you can attend, notify you when your favorite musicians are in town).

· Educational Opportunities based on the users interest

· Entertainment opportunities based on the users interest

· Support or help based on users interests or needs

· Family Calendar (all members post and sync the same calendar)

Of course there are many more services but this list like all the lists in the book is to start the concept not build it out completely

The last component of the “Myverse” migration process is the concept of remote guidance. In many families there are the computer people and the non-computer people. While the computer people will “comprehend” the Syncverse the non-computer people may have the greatest use for the tool set. So with the remote or remote managed migration process there is the ability to allow another person to watch and review the migration for a less technical person.

10. Information, light bulbs and the answer to the universal question

In the exceptional novel “The Hitchhikers guide to the universe” Douglas Adams presents us with a series of conundrums that change how we perceive the things around us.

1. Mice are not infallible

2. You can throw an entire planet at a problem and still end up with the answer 42

There is however a darker meaning in the void represented by the works of Mr. Adams. At least in my opinion there is a darker meaning. We reject mice because they appear on the surface to be vermin. In the works of Mr. Adams we discover that they represent a much higher intelligence then we do. Which if you think about it seems almost poetic justice. Dolphins as well represent another species of animals much smarter than humans (and kinder as well, they “Thanks for all the fishes” as they leave us before our destruction). The real issue however is that we, humans didn’t read the warning signs posted about the destruction of our planet.

I wonder if information and the withholding, managing and controlled distribution systems we’ve built isn’t us ignoring the warning signs. What seems key in the “Hitchhikers Guide” is keeping an open mind about what is both possible and probable.

Yet we lock both possibility and probability away. I’ve used this quote many times from Alexander Solzhenitsyn that loosely goes like this, you can imprison my body but you cannot imprison my mind. I can, however surround your mind with ignorance. I can keep information from you that might change the course of history. I can deny you information.

I have spent most of the past 15 years of my career involved in IP management and creation. I’ve watched system after system come and go. I have watched great ideas slide off to the side to be forgotten because they weren’t really the answer people wanted. I have heard great ideas about IP creation and reuse die because well, other people knew the answer. I’ve come to realize that information and the creation of information isn’t simply a reusability process and a reusability problem. It’s a growth problem.

There is a fabled mountain into which 1000 stairs have been carved. The legend says that each step has a contemplative message and that you stop at the step that meets your current “need” to reflect upon that need and the solution to what-ever problem troubles you. It is a journey that takes a lifetime. Or, if you don’t have a lot of pain points it is an afternoon’s walk.

What if, however, we redesigned the mountain? What if we left the answers to the problems next to every step? You see really, IP is simply answering questions quickly and correctly. What if the journey from perception, to problem to solution was shortened by using information?

What if everyone could easily find and climb that mountain?

Then each set of answers would continue to be improved. Each journey would move faster thought the steps producing more answers. Each variation would allow for new people to solve their variations of the original problem.

It would no longer be the journey of a thousand steps. It would become the information superhighway. We could fulfill the dream that was the internet oh those many years ago.

What if the answer isn’t 42?
