learning about AI, oh and cleaning…

I removed a lot of stuff from the storage area. Or, as it has become the crap pile in the basement. Now, I can get rid of much more stuff overall. I realize that, like many people, I do have FONHTRC. It is a fairly common disorder in the modern age.

Fear of not having the right cable

A good friend asked me for a list of all the AI podcasts and resources I’ve been listening to/using over the last couple of months.

  1. AI For Humans (this is the best mix of technical and simply hilarious) (Podcast and their YouTube are simply amazing)
  2. Last week in AI – two great AI thinkers discussing the news
  3. Super Data Scientists (in-depth awesome interviews)

Those three will consume 2- or more hours per week. AI for Humans is the one I will never miss. That podcast is just funny, and honestly, it is also extremely informative.

AI, or Machine Intelligence, is a growth area for many systems over the next 2-4 years. In the short term, it will mostly improve automation. In the long term, it will potentially help people be productive in ways they couldn’t in the past.

Machine Intelligence is, as many call it, the 4th industrial revolution. 5g and Machine Intelligence are the starting points. When we reach the point where reliable, highly available bandwidth is available for all (anytime and anyplace), we will commence the 4th industrial revolution.

The joys of 3d printing

I started using a Kindle more than 15 years ago. The new Kindle Scribe may be the best new Kindle in a LONG time. My unboxing review or extended review link is below. I am enjoying doing the extended reviews and, so far, getting good feedback on them!

133577347869997450One of the projects I use the 3D printer for is creating and repairing things in the house. We have a shelf brace in the kitchen that broke. Based on that, I am going to print a new brace. It is the value of a 3D printer, at least for me, to be able to easily replace broken plastic parts.

It prints parts, which is the reason for a good 3D scanner.

However, one thing I do consider is the reality of my home network. Honestly, since moving to Xfinity, I have found a number of issues.

  1. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS `10g
  2. At best, the router provided by Xfinity is a ½ hour wireless router. They advertise a whole home, but it really isn’t true.
  3. I have a smaller house now, and it can’t cover the house.
  4. The network needs to be fixed. We had an outage yesterday that they nicely let us know about after the fact.

In the future, two components of the networks will be critical. The first is growing more and more critical: the concept of reliability. Reliability is the future of the network and the biggest issue going forward. The remainder of the reality of the network is continuing to grow.

With Machine Intelligence on the horizon, reliable expanding networks will be critical!

so many projects…

One of the solutions I am playing with is White Rabbit (it is a Mac-only tool). I must say that it runs a lot faster with the new iMac and the M3 chipset. However, I do have to note that the old Macbook I had only had 16 gigs of RAM and was also running on the Intel chip.

1200-187014300-pink-lotus-flowerI’ve also been experimenting with Sonu, the AI (Machine Intelligence) system for song creation. I wrote a song many years ago and put that into the system; the output was pretty cool. I shared the output (Mp4) on my YouTube channel yesterday; the link is below. Please note that the words are the ones I wrote; AI created everything else!

(link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnJDCHLVBPw)

There are other projects I am partway through and will share later. I am also working on two books right now. Writing relaxes me; even writing for work is relaxing. That is a part of me! One of the things I enjoy writing about is restaurant and other service reviews.

I finally caught up on Yelp reviews yesterday at lunch. Taking a trip to Indiana brought several reviews to complete. As I said, writing relaxes me, so doing reviews is fun. I finally caught up with the reviews I was behind. If I can only catch up at work, things will be awesome.

One last project is coming; I will talk about it tomorrow.

on connected telescopes

These are useful in the expanding world of connected or smart telescopes. Of course, the concept of what is connected is important. I can connect anything via wifi or Bluetooth to my computer or cell phone in my model.

moon2The two solutions are Dwarf II and Unistellar. Dwarf II is smaller (more portable) and does more than simply stargaze. You can use Dwarf as a wifi camera if you want, although I haven’t. It would be fun to video a bird landing on a bird video system!

I should set it up to video the bird, buddy! The other system is a more traditional telescope, Unistellar. It has a traditional telescope mount and allows you to capture images via connected software. By traditional it also has more automation, and that is important!

Dwarf II does the same thing. I like Unistellar’s “bite-sized application better than the two. But they are both quite usable. I haven’t shared some of my new images but plan to do so on my Instagram and thread accounts.

Last but not least, I figured out a way to continue sharing Bird Buddy videos while staying caught up. I share those on my TikTok and YouTube channels.

My tech review is live, oh and wandering Machine Intelligence market value

It’s Tuesday, so I am sharing my extended review video.

aaaOne of the things I have been reviewing is the reality of Machine Intelligence as it begins to change the market. I talked with a friend yesterday, and the “eventual market size” topic came up. I’ve seen many bandied about for the “total market” of Machine Intelligence.

As in numbers, that would be larger than the total GDP of the two largest economies in the world. 8-10 trillion dollars in total market value.

I am trying to figure out what to make of that potential. There is a massive market for what is coming.  The issue with “projecting” the economic impact of Machine Intelligence for me is the reality of what that market will be. Do we go and review only pure machine intelligence solutions?

These questions about market segmentation are crucial. Should we view the market through the lens of pure machine intelligence solutions, or should we consider it based on the reality of cars? (Many cars sold in 2022 and beyond have self-driving capabilities that are an iteration of MI.) These considerations will help us better understand and predict the market value of Machine Intelligence.

But the market is going to be big. I would encompass the vast majority of what is now the technology market. Marketed printing, cameras, smartphones, smartwatches, and smart automobiles will be connected using Machine Intelligence here.

These are indeed interesting times, with the rapid advancements in Machine Intelligence. I, for one, am excited to see how this technology will continue to shape our world.

ah Monday, oh crap Monday.

I’ve tracked and backed several companies through the crowdfunding process. There are a couple for which I’ve backed multiple projects that I find amazing. Revopoint is one of those companies. They are in the 3d scanning world. While I disagree with how they implemented their initial portable 3d scanning, the new stuff is amazing.

Revopoint-MIRACO-3d-scanner-displayMiraco is a truly portable 3D scanner. You can scan anything, anywhere. It is a handheld scanner that you can use free-stranding or with a rotating platform (the platform is included with the Miraco). The software does a great job rendering the object from physical 3D to digital 3D.

Another company I am a huge fan of and have used and backed multiple times is Snapmaker. I know; I talk about them all the time. They are a great 3D printer and company. Snapmaker continues improving their slicer, Luban, and making it easier to use and create!

But with the world of AI exploding (ok, I still hate AI as a term), what you can do is becoming even more amazing. I have written a few songs over the years. I could improve, but I enjoyed the process. With the new tools, I can create a song much faster than I did in the old days.

Even more is possible with the promised-to-be soon-released video tool! I am playing with some of the video creation tools; they are interesting. I will share some results when I get better!

why reliable matters more than you realize

I am a huge fan of OTA (over-the-air) updates. Considering the updates from MSFT, Google, Apple, etc, OTA is amazing. But, in cars, you only sometimes notice that the company is updating your car. Well, until you get a huge change. We have the Mercedes EV (The EQB 350). It is an SUV and electric. Like the one in our Mercedes EV, OTA car updates bring significant benefits. They can improve the vehicle’s performance, safety, and user experience, making driving more efficient and enjoyable.

Artificial-IntelligenceThey did an OTA update while it was in the shop (minor management). This update was a complete redo of the car’s digital screen, and I was blown away. They made the information easier to consume on the screens by redesigning the layout and font size. Plus, they surfaced information that was there before, but you had to do a big. For example, they now display the current speed limit on the screen, which is incredibly helpful.

Now, this is critical for the future. Understanding the concept of ‘liable networks’ is important when over-the-air updates become critical components. It’s not just about coverage. Coverage means you can receive a signal from the carrier under perfect conditions, without obstacles between you and the tower. However, receiving a signal is only the first step. ‘Reliable networks, ‘on the other hand, ensure that this signal is consistently strong and stable, even in less-than-ideal conditions. This is crucial for successfully implementing OTA updates in cars.

It’s why there are no 10g networks. It is advertising, and frankly, it is, at best, dishonest. 10g is beyond 6g, and 6g to date is not a standard. So, like coverage maps, I can do anything. The reality is how reliable the signal is once you’ve locked on (receiving a signal and locking on are two different steps for success).

In the age of hype, what you say matters.

nothing like 3d printers!

I got the Creality X1 up and running yesterday. There is the reality of hype versus the real process. They advertise 600ms as the maximum printing speed; in the real world, roughly printing a four-by-three-by-two object in around 11 minutes. It was as advertised.

Titan 2I started with the included test print (I have to admit that I searched high and low for the USB key, only to find out they preloaded the test print in the printer’s static memory). I shared a setup video and will include that today, along with the first print video.

My next project is taking a scan (using the Revopoint) and printing something from my office space. I have a plastic clip that broke. I’ve glued it, but I want to replace it. So it has been scanned, and a new set of clips from there. The beauty is in the future. If it cracks again, I print a new one.

Rapid versus large is always a question with 3d printers. I have two; the Snapmaker prints much larger objects than the Creality. But the Creality is more of my rapid prototype printing. There are times when you need fast and small prints!

The analyst projection is that 30% of US homes will have a 3d printer by 2030. That is a bit high.

wandering IoT

“IoT” is often used. It stands simply for the Internet of Things. It represents a set of devices that are connected to the Internet. These can be cameras, thermometers, and rain gauges. IoT is basically a series of connected sensors, although that is not everything It represents.

ankermake m5The goal today is to discuss sensors in the world around us. First, let’s discuss medical devices that are sensors. Personal sensors that report on your health and state of well-being. These include devices implanted in your body and those reporting on other aspects of health.

Now, why would I spend time talking about sensors? Well, increasingly, the device the sensor connects to is your cell phone. More and more things (CGM and continuous glucose monitors are a good example) connect to your cellular phone. You get an instantaneous report on what is going on.

IoT is a rapidly expanding field. In my own home, I’ve embraced this trend with over 40 IoT sensors. Many of these connect to a base station, like my weather systems, and then to the Internet. But what really fascinates me is the potential for these devices to connect to my cell phone, giving me a wealth of information at my fingertips.

The amount of information I can access at any given moment through IoT never fails to amaze me!

smartwatches…

I know that times are different now than when I was younger. I got my first wristwatch when I was 12. I got one for my high school graduation, which I still have. I have worn a watch nearly every day since I was 18. I truly enjoy watches and continue to use them.

IMG_0886When the first smartwatch hit crowdfunding, I jumped on the Pebble Train. Pebble was the first smartwatch, and it was awesome. There was a watch before Pebble connected to information sources, the Spot watch, but the Spot was a true smartwatch.

Pebble ushered the concept of a smartwatch into the market. You could add applications and change watch faces. I was still using the Pebble until the Apple Watch 3 came out. Simply, the Pebble did everything I needed or used the watch for.

But Apple released the Apple Watch 3, and it changed everything. But I have to say it was still missing the last piece of the Dick Tracey dream video. Enter the unbelievable Wirstcam product, and suddenly, you can talk and participate in video calls on YOUR watch. By the way, my wife, who is not a huge techie, loves her Apple Watch!

You can still load applications; frankly, with the app store, the watch has more and more capability. But yesterday I found out something that I hadn’t known before. You can unlock your Macintosh with your watch. It took me five minutes to set it up, but now my Mac unlocks with my WATCH!
