Episode 45

Decide to Dig – 11 days

The decision was on a Monday. The Friday 11 days later was the first day of digging. The effect of the town’s long held rules against planning became apparent by Monday morning.

A foundation for the new part of the building was dug. The decision had been made that this part of the building would include the first cellar (that the general store was paying for) that was to be used as a wine cellar for the 11 bottles of wine the general store had.

Monday morning the hole was filled with water so the wine cellar was cancelled. The two wineophiles in town were very upset. They had envisioned wine and cheese tastings in the new wine cellar.

“No WINE CELLAR” the town paper cried the next day.

They filled the hole back in and began building.

The interesting thing about building in a swamp is that the ground isn’t that stable. A three story building weighs a certain amount. That amount may or may not exceed the ability of the ground around the building to support the weight. Additionally swamps are not even. In fact there are sections of former swamp land that are in fact wetter than others (springs etc). Add that to the complex geology known as Kharst Topology and you have a problem.
